Savoy Auditions
Having spent August taking applications from countless pianists, September was filled with over 50 auditions (not counting the call backs!), seeing musicians enormously differing in experience. Ranging from music school students, to pianists of international acclaim, the only constant being the sheer level of talent that spread across the board. This did not make the selection process any easier, as we quickly discovered that those who could probably bring an audience in the Royal Albert Hall to a standing ovation, somehow didn’t quite seem the right choice to play “atmospheric, background classics”.
So after visits from pianists from 5 of the 7 continents, we narrowed it down to 12 regular players, each with a unique talent, and who all made our small bleak auditioning room in Jacques Samuels feel like a box at the Proms. No such transformations needed in the Savoy, but I can’t wait to hear what such surroundings will do for such musicians.
